Rule # 1.49 There will always be someone slower than you.
Taken straight from the pages of the Runner’s Rule Book by Mark Remy. (Which is really a great read, you should get a copy.)
Many would-be runners are deterred by the conviction that they’re too slow, and the fear that if they enter a race, they’ll surely finish last. This is nonsense.
The fact is that there is always someone slower than you. Always.
“But surely,” you must be thinking, “somewhere in the world there exists a runner so very pokey that he or she is the slowest runner in the world. By definition, there can be no one slower than this poor bastard.”
Well, first of all, watch the language. And second, no, this is not the case. There is someone slower than the slowest person and someone slower than that person.
Scientists are still trying to figure out exactly how this is possible, but that’s the reality.
So if you’re looking for an excuse not to run, keep looking.
Rule 1.50 There will also always be someone faster than you.
So don’t go getting cocky.
Side Note: But you could get your copy of 30 Days to Your Fastest 5K and be on your way to beating that person..
